The train, the Gletscherbahn 2, was a funicular railway running from Kaprun to the Kitzsteinhorn, opened in 1974. This railway had the unusual track gauge of 946 millimeters, and a length of 3900 meters, of which 3300 meters was through a tunnel.

Auch die im Jahr 1974 eröffnete erste alpine wetterunabhängige Stollen-Standseilbahn, die Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 vom Tal direkt zum Alpincenter, galt seinerzeit als technische Pionierleistung. Der „Gletscher Shuttle", eine auf Knopfdruck fungierende Standseilbahn, verbindet seit 1990 den Gletscher mit der Bergstation Kitzsteinhorn.

Bei einem Brand in einem im Tunnel befindlichen Zug der Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 starben am 11. November 2000 155 Menschen. Es war die größte Katastrophe, die sich in Österreich seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ereignete. Im brennenden, bergauf fahrenden Zug kamen 150 der 162 Passagiere durch Rauchgasvergiftung zu Tode.
