Hugo van der Goes (d. 1482) was the most noted painter in Ghent in the latter part of the fifteenth century. He was frequently engaged for producing decorations for civic celebrations and official processions, but is most famous for his large altarpieces, especially the Portinari Altarpiece (ca. 1473-78) painted for the hospital church of Sant Egidio in Florence.
