To some, the NC500 is the ultimate Scottish cycling challenge. It's 516 miles (830-kilometres) and takes in some of the best sights of the Scottish Highlands. It's also well known as a driving route, something of a Scotland Route 66 (Route 66 being the iconic driving route in the USA).

The NC500 is a circular ride, heading west from Inverness to Wester Ross and then up the coastline, all the way to Durness in the far north. From there (and with crucial variations to the traditional 'designed for vehicles' NC500), the route heads east along the coast, before turning south at Melvich and returning you to Inverness via quiet roads.

The NC500 begins in Inverness, a northern city in Scotland and heads west over to Applecross before venturing north and roughly following the coastline back round to Inverness.
