Meinhard von Gerkan was born in Riga, Latvia on 3 January 1935 to a Baltic German family, long before the occupation of Latvia and Estonia by the Soviet Union in June 1940. His father died on the Eastern Front in 1942 while serving as a German soldier. His mother died shortly after fleeing from Poznan, in Nazi occupied Poland.
